HCCC Response to Federal Budget 2018

Posted: 02-27-2018

Ottawa, ON, February 27 2018, The Health Charities Coalition of Canada is delighted to see the increased federal support for fundamental research. This is an important step in strengthening the Canadian health research ecosystem. This support will provide jobs and stimulate the economy, setting the stage for improved prosperity and innovation in the future.

The investments made today are the beginning of a new chapter of building a diverse, robust, and knowledge-based workforce. Canada’s early career investigators require enhanced support to secure the future generation of Canadian researchers, we’re pleased to see this important group be recognized.

“These investments will help to advance science in Canada and ensure that our young researchers receive adequate support to continue to grow and contribute new knowledge in their area of study” said Janet Yale, Chair of the Health Charities Coalition of Canada and President and CEO of The Arthritis Society of Canada.

Federal Government investments have the benefit of nurturing the research ecosystem in Canada; which not only bolsters the research system but also saves Canadians’ lives.

“Federal announcements today will build much-needed momentum as they commit to long-term sustainable funding for health research investments, which includes investments from health charities,” said Connie Côté, CEO of the Health Charities Coalition of Canada. “We expect the investments today will lead to a stronger research environment in Canada, something that is long overdue for the country.”

In addition to the investments in research, HCCC is pleased to see the Federal government taking a leadership role in the creation of the Advisory Council on the Implementation of National Pharmacare. We look forward to working with the Government in establishing strong patient partnerships for the Council.

Members of the Health Charities Coalition of Canada wish to express their thanks and gratitude to the Honourable Minister of Finance, Bill Morneau and the members of the Standing Committee on Finance for their work in preparing this year’s budget. HCCC members look forward to integrating the perspectives of patients and the health charity sector as we work with the Federal Government to implement these investments.
